Under Section 46.2 – 896 of Virginia law, a driver involved in an accident in which no one is hurt or killed but in which an unattended vehicle or other property is damaged must make a reasonable attempt to locate the owner of the damaged property and report what happened. If the driver cannot locate the owner, he is required to leave a note giving all pertinent information to the owner and must report the incident within 24 hours to law enforcement.
Under Section 46.2 – 894 of Virginia law, the driver involved in an accident in which someone is injured or killed or where other attended property is damaged must stop at the scene and leave his personal information. This information includes name, address, license number, and vehicle registration number. The driver is also required to render assistance or aid to the injured. Failure to stop at the scene of an accident is classified as a Class 5 felony if the accident caused injury or death of if it resulted in more than $1,000 worth of property damage. This offense is charged as a Class 1 misdemeanor if the accident resulted in less than $1,000 worth of property damage.
